In the city of Neverwinter, the dwarf Gundren Rockseeker, hired the player characters to safely deliver his wagon-load of supplies to Barthen’s Provisions in the frontier town of Phandalin. Gundren had gone ahead with a warrior, Sildar Hallwinter, to attend to business in the town while the characters followed with the supplies.
The characters came upon a gruesome scene while traveling toward Phandalin on the Triboar Trail. Horses had been slain and riders nowhere to be seen. They suspected these were the mounts of Gundren and Sildar. Goblins ambushed the characters, but were defeated – with a goblin named Snork captured.
Snork verified that these were indeed Gundren and Sildar’s mounts – and the men had been taken to the goblin hideout. The party convinced Snork to lead them to the place he called Cragmaw Hideout. He was happy to do so and lead them safely there, but first they secured the wagon off the trail. With the promise of his share of loot, Snork committed to helping the party infiltrate Cragmaw Hideout.
In Cragmaw Hideout – the party freed some semi-feral wolves; knocked out another which wore a collar with the name Ripper inscribed; magically charmed the goblin’s boss, the bugbear Klarg, and told him the other goblins plotted a coup, thus sending him into battle with the party against the rest of the goblins; once the hideout was clear of goblins, where in the process they rescued Sildar, they turned on Klarg just as the charm spell wore off and he was drowned in a flood set in motion by the party by breaking a damn.
After the battles where over, they secured Ripper bound with ropes; retrieved the wagon and loaded up large crates of goods they found within the hideout. With Sildar, who was weak and in need of escort, they headed to Phandalin.
Sildar revealed that Gundren carried a map of an ancient mine he wants to reclaim, but Gundren and the map were taken elsewhere. He was not sure where. He fears the map may be why Gundren was taken.
